From installation to commissioning: the LIFE SUGAR pilot reaches a major milestone

The construction and installation of the LIFE SUGAR pilot plant at Vetrerie Meridionali furnace in Castellana Grotte, Italy, have been successfully completed.

This milestone marks the end of the main construction phase and the transition from engineering and installation activities to commissioning, bringing the project one step closer to full operation.

From design to a fully integrated pilot plant

The LIFE SUGAR pilot is a 1:10 scale demonstrator developed to validate an innovative concept for recovering waste heat from glass production and using it to support the generation of a hydrogen-rich syngas through Steam Methane Reforming (SMR).

Over the previous months, the different sections of the system were manufactured, assembled and progressively integrated at the Vetrerie Meridionali site.

The completed installation includes the reforming unit together with the steam, natural gas, nitrogen and waste-gas circuits, instrumentation, automation, control and safety systems required for pilot operation.

A particularly important part of this phase was the integration of the demonstrator with the existing industrial infrastructure and with Centauro Furnace 3, which provides the operating environment required for the LIFE SUGAR demonstration.

Cold commissioning begins

With the installation activities completed, the project moved into cold commissioning.

During this phase, the project team carried out the final verification of equipment, instrumentation, communication signals, control logic, process sequences and safety interlocks before introducing the operating fluids and moving towards the first hot tests.

These activities represent an essential step between construction and operation, ensuring that every section of the system is ready to work as part of an integrated process.

Preparing for ignition

The completion of the pilot represents an important achievement for the LIFE SUGAR project.

At full industrial scale, the technology is being developed with the objective of delivering energy savings above 15% while contributing to a significant reduction in CO₂ emissions from the glass melting process.

With construction behind us and commissioning underway, LIFE SUGAR is moving from concept and engineering into its most important phase: demonstrating the technology under real industrial conditions.
